MOVIE BEGINS AT

(Hong Kong, 1987)

Loosely based on a short story from the 17th century, A Chinese Ghost Story tells a bittersweet tale of a rather clueless tax collector who falls in love with a female ghost. The movie got everything:  martial arts, zombies, ghosts, tree-demons, romance, slapstick, tragedy. It even got a very fameous Daoist rap scene - this got a bit lost in the subtitles, but apparently the very drunk warrior-monk raps about following his own Dao instead of relying on the established schools.
Chinese Ghost Story was released in 1986, the year before Evil Dead II came out. They both share the same relentless energy; most likely, A Chinese Ghost Story was influenced by the first Evil Dead movie. This goes both ways: Sam Raimi took the climax from A Chinese Ghost Story and recycled it in Army of Darkness.

Director: Ching Siu-Tung

(Shaolin Soccer, House of Flying Daggers)

(Japan, 1986, 35MM)

This classic Japanese “pink film” (softcore) from highly regarded cult director Suzuki is a beautifully photographed erotic epic about the sexual intrigues of the ruling classes in ancient Japan. A very suggestive, classy and stylish melodrama with a great 80's style soundtrack – very enjoyable. You can only see it here - this film is not available on DVD or other formats!
